The above video essay argues that yes, this rhetoric is meant to conjure a sense of solidarity — which we desperately need — but it can also provide cover for eroding our civil liberties. But there could be a silver lining to all this. While we should be careful of ceding control of our rights and liberties, maybe the inequities exposed through tragedy and collective hardship will make us ask: What world do we want to live in when all this has passed?"
