"Once a year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority holds auditions for musicians to perform in subway and commuter train stations, and for the past couple of years, Joan Chiverton, an illustrator and music lover, has sketched the hopefuls. The auditions, which take place in Grand Central Terminal, have a festive atmosphere, starting with the master of ceremonies, Robert Holman, the poet and indefatigable poetry evangelist, who wears a referee’s striped shirt and blows a whistle on musicians who exceed their five-minute time limit.
