Spurred by the Mexican Revolution and succeeding civil war, it sought to reunify the country, but also educate the common man through powerful messages of cultural identity, solidarity, oppression, resistance and progress. Although it started as a government-backed program, it evolved into a fiercely independent movement that intersected art and politics.
