Kentile Floors Sign, a Stalwart Remnant of a Grittier Brooklyn, Will Get a New Home

"It is confirmed: The Kentile Floors sign in Brooklyn is coming down. But the majestic 50-year-old icon will be saved, said City Councilman Brad Lander, who helped broker the deal. And it will be reinstalled nearby. The owner of the warehouse building beneath the sign, Elyahu Cohen, has agreed to donate it to a neighborhood nonprofit group, the Gowanus Alliance, which will find a new home for it. The sign has been the subject of a sudden preservation campaign since news of its possible demolition broke last week."

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope (197

"For their second album, the Clash worked with the American hard rock producer Sandy Pearlman, best-known for his work with Blue Öyster Cult and the Dictators. The teaming was quite controversial within the punk community, and the sound of Give 'Em Enough Rope is considerably cleaner, yet the more direct sound hardly tamed the Clash. While the record doesn't burn with the same intense, amateurish energy of The Clash, it does have a big, forceful sound that is nearly as powerful. What keeps Give 'Em Enough Rope from being a classic is its slightly inconsistent material. Many of the songs are outright classics, particularly the first half of the record ('Safe European Home,' 'English Civil War,' 'Tommy Gun,' 'Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad') and 'Stay Free,' but the group loses some momentum toward the end of the record. Even with such flaws, Give 'Em Enough Rope ranks as one of the strongest albums of the punk era."

Sean Scully

Red Merida 2002
"Timothy Taylor Gallery is proud to announce a presentation of ambitious new paintings by Sean Scully. This is the artist’s eighth solo show with the gallery and the first opportunity to view new work in London since 2010. ... Monumental in scale, the works featured in this exhibition demonstrate a mature confidence and unwavering drive for experimentation. Indeed the focal point of the show, Kind of Red, 2013, a powerful five-panel installation on aluminium, is unlike any work previously made by the artist. Music, particularly jazz, has always played an inspirational part in Scully’s practice and Kind of Red references the seminal 1959 Miles Davis album Kind of Blue, which Scully absorbed while making these paintings in his German studio."

Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay

"When we first heard about Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay, the upcoming documentary about industrial music and its origins, it struck us as relevant for a death metal site. In the landscape of popular music, there are obvious 'pop' genres on the surface next to accepted forms like jazz and classical, but underneath that are the surly and dangerous types of music that are underground because they don’t place nice with the contemporary mythos and ideology of our society. That group includes metal, hardcore punk (not pop punk, which belongs under rock/pop) and industrial. These genres just refuse to play by the same rules as everyone else who wants mainstream acceptance, mainly because they flirt with or outright endorse ideas that the mainstream has decided are unpalatable."

King Sunny Ade - Classics, Vol. 1: Let Them Say/Edide (2001)

"To sow the seeds of confusion, the Edide album here is not the same as the E Dide that was issued in the West in 1995 (in fact, there's no date on it). It is, however, paired with 1986's Let Them Say for a strong groove fest, especially on the title cut and 'Bami Wa Solution.' With a total of 16 cuts, nothing goes on too long, so the band doesn't have the chance to stretch out that it really needs. But there's still plenty of incisive guitar work from King Sunny Ade himself, and the percussion percolates and simmers throughout, with plenty of juju call-and-response phrasing in the songs. While these reissues are wonderful in general, and certainly do a service to those in the West who never had a chance to own the Nigerian originals, a little more thought would have been appreciated, both in the way LPs were juxtaposed on CD and to information in the liner notes."

The 5 Essential Rules of Film Noir

"Film Noir. When you think that phrase, the mind is immediately drawn to images of leggy ice queens, rumbled losers in fedoras, guns, neon and certain deadpan cynicism. Film Noir wasn’t a self conscious movement in the way the French New Wave was. It wasn’t a brand name like a Marvel superhero epic. But it did tap into something dark in the American postwar zeitgeist and became for a spell hugely popular. It also created some of the most unforgettable images in film history."

Wire - 154 (1979)

"Named for the number of live gigs Wire had played to that point, 154 refines and expands the innovations of Chairs Missing, with producer Mike Thorne's synthesizer effects playing an even more integral role; little of Pink Flag's rawness remains. If Chairs Missing was a transitional album between punk and post-punk, 154 is squarely in the latter camp, devoting itself to experimental soundscapes that can sound cold and forbidding at times. However, the best tracks retain their humanity thanks to the arrangements' smooth, seamless blend of electronic and guitar textures and the beauty of the group's melodies. Where previously some of Wire's hooks could find themselves buried or not properly brought out, the fully fleshed-out production of 154 lends a sweeping splendor to 'The 15th,' the epic 'A Touching Display,' 'A Mutual Friend,' and the gorgeous (if obscurely titled) 'Map Ref. 41°N 93°W.' ..."

Barbara Kruger at Modern Art Oxford

"Modern Art Oxford presents a monumental solo exhibition of new and recent work by internationally acclaimed artist, Barbara Kruger. The exhibition will comprise a site-specific architectural wrap of Modern Art Oxford's iconic Upper gallery, alongside an installation of classic 1980s paste-up works and a major film presentation in the John Piper Gallery. With a career spanning over four decades, Kruger’s instantly recognizable work combines bold lettering, colours and dramatic juxtapositions of text and image, to investigate the machinations of power in popular culture today. Through ironic appropriation of specific slogans and imagery, Kruger deploys the visual strategies of mass communication in order to challenge the often manipulative logic at work in the language of advertising, television and other media and the role of Western consumerist culture."

Available Light - Zoe Leonard

"For her most recent solo exhibition at Galerie Gisela Capitain, entitled ‘Available Light’, Zoe Leonard transformed the front room of the gallery into a camera obscura. In the remaining spaces, she displayed black and white analogue photographs taken of the sun, produced without the aid of retouching. Together, these works presented not only a rumination on the medium of photography but also on the nature of perception in general – concerns that have long been at the core of Leonard’s practice. Rather than highlighting a divide between the world and its image, Leonard uses a quasi-journalistic approach to attempt to reveal the complexities of such distinctions in the first place."

Born in the Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop

"Born in the Bronx is a striking anthology of Hip Hop's baby steps. Not only does it capture the emergence of a burgeoning culture but also the fashion and character of the surrounding community. From rare photographs of MC's and DJs to records, flyers, and other ephemera, writer Johan Kugelberg has pulled together the scattered remains of a movement that never has its eye on posterity. The book includes the improvisational artwork of previously unpublished street flyers of the era, Polaroids buried for decades in basements across the Bronx, and testimonials from the most scholarly historians of Hip Hop culture - the legends and pioneers who lived it!"

Recommended Records Sampler

Wikpedia - "The Recommended Records Sampler is a sampler double album by various artists released by English independent record label Recommended Records on LP in 1982. It contains tracks by musicians and groups on the Recommended Records catalogue at the time. This sampler differed from the traditional record label sampler in that all the pieces here were newly recorded by the artists and, at the time, had never been released elsewhere. (Many of the tracks were later re-released on the artists' own albums.) In 1985 Recommended Records launched the RēR Quarterly, a 'quarterly' sound-magazine, which continued this approach of releasing previously unreleased work on a compilation album."

Vietnam Zippos: American Soldiers' Engravings and Stories (1965-1973)

"... But as this stunning book attests, the Zippo was far more than an instrument of death and destruction. For the American soldiers who wielded them, they were a vital form of social protest as well. Vietnam Zippos showcases the engravings made by U.S. soldiers on their lighters during the height of the conflict, from 1965 to 1973. In a real-life version of the psychedelic war portrayed in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Sherry Buchanan tells the fascinating story of how the humble Zippo became a talisman and companion for American GIs during their tours of duty. Through a dazzling array of images, we see how Zippo lighters were used during the war, and we discover how they served as a canvas for both personal and political expression during the Age of Aquarius, engraved with etchings of peace signs and marijuana leaves and slogans steeped in all the rock lyrics, sound bites, combat slang, and antiwar mottos of the time."

Hillary Chute On Julie Doucet

"JULIE DOUCET looms large in the pantheon of contemporary cartoonists despite not having published comics qua comics for more than a decade. (Her groundbreaking, often autobiographical comics were produced between 1987 and 2000.) In her current art practice, Doucet, based in Montreal, has not so much left comics as moved to the far edges, focusing on linocuts, collage, and papier-mâché sculpture, along with artist’s books that mine the language of graphic narrative even as they exceed it. Her earlier urge to document her own life hasn’t disappeared. Her book 365 Days (2008) is a drawing and collage account of each day of one year. And in 2010, she released, with director Michel Gondry, My New New York Diary, a collaborative 'film book' (which includes a DVD component) in which she is an actor placed in the world of her own drawings—another nod to the personal and quotidian. Doucet, filmed by Gondry, drinks a drawn beer and is massaged by drawn hands at a strip club."

Smiley Smile: Best Album Ever

"... And then the release of Smile kept getting delayed. In June of 1967 the Beach Boys canceled out of the Monterey Pop Festival, the pre-Woodstock, Summer of Love anointing of the Byrds, the Dead, Joplin, Hendrix, the Who, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar. Was Brian Wilson worried that the Beach Boys were too square for the hippies? And then the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper. Finally, in September of 1967 the Beach Boys released . . . . Smiley Smile. This wasn't progress. This wasn't an advance. This was a collapse, or maybe a retraction, or even a surrender. Not the next Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper. Or an improvement on Pet Sounds. This was . . . what exactly?"

Wikipedia - "Bocce ..., sometimes anglicized as bocci, is a ball sport belonging to the boules sport family, closely related to bowls and pétanque, with a common ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire. Developed into its present form in Italy (where it is called bocce, the plural of the Italian word boccia which means 'bowl'), it is played around Europe and also in overseas areas that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North America, and South America (where it is known as bochas, or bolas criollas in Venezuela, bocha in Brazil). Capoeira

Capoeira Scene, Brazil, 1820-24 (Augustus Earle)
Wikipedia - "Capoeira ... is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by African descendants (N'golo, or zebra dance - a kind of dance in which the participant uses their feet to kick the head of their opponent similar to how a zebra moves, hence the name) with native Brazilian influences (Maraná war fight - a kind of fight that they use all their bodies to attack the enemy), probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques; at heart is the ginga (similar to native Brazilian dance until today), the back-and-forth, foot-to-foot movement that serves as the starting point for such leverage. ..."

Anouar Brahem Trio - Astrakan Café (2000)

"The Tunisian oud genius has done it again. Anouar Brahem has issued only five records under his own name over the past decade, each more adventurous than the last, without compromising his original vision: for the music of his region to meet with the other music of Africa and Asia and create a delirious sound that is equal thirds past, present, and future, along the precipice of historical lineage. For Brahem there is no attempt to synthesize the globe, or even the sounds of the East with those of the West. He is content in his knowledge that sound is infinite, and that his tradition, as it evolves and expands into a deeper pan-African/trans-Asian whole, is more than large enough for a master musician to rummage through in one lifetime. ..."

K. Leimer by Alexis Georgopoulos

"Since the mid–1970s, electronic composer K. Leimer has produced a rich and vast body of work. It has often, if somewhat hastily, been referred to as ambient—that is, when it has been referred to at all. While some of his albums do exhibit certain tropes of that drifting, sometimes unnerving calm, the more comprehensive truth is more complicated, and more interesting, than that tag might imply."

Unfamiliar Streets

"City scenes have been chronicled in photographs since the early 1800s, but street photography as traditionally defined has captured a relatively narrow field of these images. Revolutionizing the history of street photography, Unfamiliar Streets explores the work of Richard Avedon (1923–2004), Charles Moore (1931–2010), Martha Rosler (b. 1943), and Philip-Lorca diCorcia (b. 1951), four American photographers whose careers in fashion, photojournalism, conceptual art, and contemporary art are not usually associated with the genre."

Mastering Light: From the Natural to the Artificial

Shadow Decoration (1887), Charles Courtney Curran
"A young woman hangs sheer white linens on a clothesline. A refulgent angel descends from the heavens while shepherds tend their flocks by night. And an early motion-picture camera captures the fairyland allure of a world’s fair, slowly panning its illuminated buildings. These vastly different images — from a 19th-century painting, a 17th-century print and a 20th-century film — are among the treasures in the current exhibition at Vassar’s Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. What brings them together is 'Mastering Light: From the Natural to the Artificial,' a quirky, thought-provoking show that divides its subject into three sometimes overlapping areas: interiors and exteriors illuminated by daylight; nighttime events made visible by moonlight or firelight; and scenes either lighted by or on the subject of artificial light."

In Which We Find His Theory Of Color Implausible

"Joseph Mallord William Turner never stopped thinking about color. When he woke, it was color, it was color before he went to bed. Not just the range, not just the spectrum: the emotional resonances, clashes and collusions, its general mien. In the final analysis he rejected any determinative theory on the subject, although he read and agreed with some of what George Field had argued in Chromatics, or an Essay on the Analogy and Harmony of Colors, published in 1817."

Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Wikipedia - "Rainer Werner Fassbinder (...31 May 1945 – 10 June 1982) was a German film director, screenwriter, and actor. He is one of the most important figures in the New German Cinema. Fassbinder maintained a frenetic pace in filmmaking. In a professional career that lasted fewer than fifteen years, he completed 40 feature length films; two television film series; three short films; four video productions; twenty-four stage plays and four radio plays; and 36 acting roles in his own and others’ films. He also worked as an actor (film and theater), author, cameraman, composer, designer, editor, producer and theater manager. Underlying Fassbinder's work was a desire to provoke and disturb. His phenomenal creative energy, when working, coexisted with a wild, self-destructive libertinism that earned him a reputation as the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema, as well as being its central figure."

Forgoing commercial sensibilities that ultimately kill in favor of those that actually benefit community, Sun Ra incorporated costume, dance, and theater into a symphonic eruption of cultural living by example. Café Le Metro, like the Tenth Street Coffeehouse and Les Deux Mégots on Seventh Street, was a popular hangout where poets gathered to drink coffee, socialize and recite their work."

Live from KCRW - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2013)

"In April 2013, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds were booked to play the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and with the same lineup of acts appearing two consecutive weekends, Cave and his bandmates had a few days to kill in California. During their downtime in the Golden State, Cave and the Bad Seeds cut a live-in-the-studio session for Santa Monica's public radio station KCRW-FM, and the recordings have been released under the straightforward (if less than imaginative) title Live from KCRW."
