Not just the range, not just the spectrum: the emotional resonances, clashes and collusions, its general mien. In the final analysis he rejected any determinative theory on the subject, although he read and agreed with some of what George Field had argued in Chromatics, or an Essay on the Analogy and Harmony of Colors, published in 1817."
